Have you ever tried something so delicious you can barely stand it—and been even more surprised that you made it yourself? This Old School Spaghetti Recipe is a simple, flavorful dish that combines cherry tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and fresh basil for a classic pasta meal.
Spaghetti with cherry tomatoes, garlic, and basil sauce comes together in about 15 minutes. It is an easy and delicious recipe that can be adapted with different pasta shapes, vegetables, or proteins.
Ingredients
For the Pasta
300 g to 500 g spaghetti (see notes)
Salt
Water
For the Cherry Tomato Sauce
600 g cherry tomatoes (about 1 liter)
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (up to 100 ml, according to taste)
2 cloves garlic, minced
½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to reduce acidity)
A few fresh basil leaves, or to taste
Instructions
Cook the Pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions. Before draining, reserve 1 cup (250 ml) of the pasta cooking water. Drain the pasta and set aside.
Prepare the Cherry Tomato Sauce
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the cherry tomatoes, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and sugar if desired.
Cook for several minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes soften on all sides. After about 5 minutes, some of the tomatoes will begin to burst naturally.
Gently press the tomatoes with a fork to release their juices and create a light sauce. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the fresh basil. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
Combine the Pasta and Sauce
Add the cooked spaghetti to the skillet and toss to coat the pasta evenly with the tomato sauce. Add a small amount of the reserved pasta water if needed to loosen and bind the sauce.
Divide the spaghetti among four serving bowls and top with grated Parmesan cheese before serving.

Adjusting the Sauce Ratio
The amount of pasta used depends on how saucy you prefer the dish. Increase the pasta quantity for a lighter coating or use less pasta for a richer tomato flavor.
Tomato Variations
If cherry tomatoes are unavailable, substitute with other ripe tomatoes such as Roma tomatoes. Cut them into small pieces and cook them in the same manner. Fresh, flavorful tomatoes are key to achieving the best taste.
Extra Flavor Ideas
For additional flavor, consider adding chopped Kalamata olives, capers, marinated artichoke hearts, anchovy fillets, or tuna packed in oil.
